Oct. 22nd, 2017 08:06 pmTea and coffee shops were still a new, upcoming culture in Ancelstierre, an elite thing that had only just come to Bain. The girls of Wyverley College had loved to make an excursion on the weekends into Bain to go to the cinema in their best outfits to go to the shops, to sip little espressos or large cups of tea, and gossip quietly to each other about the people they watched walk past the windows.
There's very little difference between those little shops Sabriel remembers, and the ones in Darrow, except that there are more in Darrow. So many more.
When Sabriel applied for a job, she'd done so saying that she was a student. It's a half truth. She's studying, working on putting all her memories of all the books she's ever learned down to notebooks so that she has a physical copy of them to cross reference if she needs to. She's shoring up the Charter stone in the Necropolis, mostly finished and very strong now. They give her a job that pays well, that's flexible, and that's understanding. She's enthusiastic, personable, good at multitasking. She may have never have made a latte before, but that's alright. They can teach her that. The important part is that she smiles when people come into the shop, and doesn't seem to get beaten down when they get mobbed by a hundred people all at once, all demanding to be served as quickly as possible.
It's hectic work, but Sabriel likes it. And it gets her out of the apartment and around other people around her age. With her eighteenth birthday come and gone now, she feels all silly, neither a girl nor really a woman these days. Without schooling, she thought she really did need a paying job. This isn't what she wants to do--probably, she ought to think about libraries or museums or something else, because she doesn't think there's much of a market for necromancy and magic work in Darrow, not her variety at any rate--but it will pay the bills and give her some experience.
The bell at the door jingles and Sabriel smiles. "Hello, welcome! How can I help you today?"
